BOW DOFF CROWNED BANJUL JUNIOR CHAMPIONS07/01/2010 08:35 AM Banjul junior championship sponsored by Humwun Treading Company wrapped up on Sunday 27th December2009 at the Saint Augustine’s Senior Secondary School ground with Bow Doff entertaining Junction Bi. The annual League competition, which gears in promoting and encouraging football at the grass root level, saw Bow Doff emerged champions in the game characterized by some wonderful display of skills and talents by both teams. Bow Doff clinched the title after their 5-3 win on penalty shootouts. The first half featured a thrilling and interesting moment with Junction Bi’s Makumba Marong wasting three clear chances in the first half, while the opponent Bow Doff managed only few opportunities. Coming into the second half both sides mounted but could not put the game to bed. The encounter ended 0-0 forced the central referee to chose the penalty kicks to separate the two antagonists. . Bow Doff finally triumphed 5-3 on penalty kicks. As winners, Bow Doff went home with the giant trophy and a cash prize, while the runners up Junction Bi bagged cash prize. Other individual prizes include the best player of the tournament, Mustapha Colley of Keller F.C, the most disciplined player, Ebrima Njie of Nangi- Nangi, the most discipline team, Keller F.C, the leading goal scorer, Kajally Gassama of F.C Faal, the best goal keeper of the tournament, Lamin Saho of Keller F.C, while the second best gold keeper went to Sainey Ceesay of Junction Bi. Present at the occasion were the former and current principals of Muslim High school Mr. Sulayman Njie and Lamin K. Marong respectively, Gambia’s renowned professional footballer Mr. Biri-Biri Njie and representatives of the sponsor family Kofi Strafford represented by Yunusa Sarvage family. All of whom expressed happiness with the way and manner the tournament was conducted. The vice chairman, who doubles as the coordinator of the junior tournament of Banjul, Mr. Keller expressed delight with the disciplinary aspect of the tournament. He thanked each and every one who, in one way or the other, rendered a supporting hand in other to make this tournament a success. He promised that this kind of competition will continue hence his main aim and objective is to promote football at the grass root level. He called on the Banjul Sport Committee to give them more supporting hands next time so as to make it better. BY: MUSA FATTY |
